Finnish records

In a recent issue of “My Heritage News” they stated that they have added a valuable collection for Finnish genealogy research. The collection has 33 million Finnish church census books and preconfirmation books that were kept by the Lutheran Church. This is collection can be searched online for the first time. It covers almost the entire population of Finland from 1657 to 1915.

Go to the myheritage.com website for more information and/or to search the collection.

September VGS Meeting

The VGS will not have a normal meeting in September.  Instead it will host a “Family History Expo”  September 28th at the Savannah Center.  Because this is an Expo and not a regular meeting all village residents are invited to attend. The Expo will open at  11:30 am and close at 3:30 pm.

Invite all of your villages friends and neighbors to attend the Expo.

February meeting

At our February meeting we discussed the Villages Genealogical Society’s internet footprint. We logged in to the VGS website and then visited it’s Facebook page, Twitter page, Google+ page and the blog. Although several members had been on these sites we were still able to find a couple of new things to review and discuss. Then we discussed the latest status of the Family Tree Maker software. We had 19 members in attendance and enjoyed considerable input and discussion.

Our March meeting will be at the Pinnellas Library on Powell Road and 466A from 10:00 am to 11:50 am. We will have an “Open Discussion” session. We will also visit a website that provides the methodology for typing special characters.

February 24th Seminar

Our February seminar with Mark Lowe is approaching quickly.  Mark is a great speaker, very down to earth and funny as well as informative.  If you have not yet registered, there is still time to do so and come hear Mark speak on the following topics:
“Finding Uncle John by Talking to Neighbors”
Using census records, manuscripts, and land records, learn details about your ancestor’s neighborhood and the
people with whom they worked, prayed, fought and married.
“Documenting the “Right” Family While Staying on Track”
Learn simple techniques for breaking down difficult research problems into manageable segments, including the
basics of documentation and why it is an important family research tool.
  “Discover Your “Magic Genealogy Box”
Learn how certain online sites and books should be placed within your reach, and how these records will
improve your daily genealogical search activities.
  “Cemeteries as a Genealogical Resource”
Tools to help you find cemeteries and ways to learn more from our ancestors through gravestones and
cemeteries.
There are still seats available for this seminar.  It is a full day of learning about researching your family history while getting to know some of your fellow researchers.  These  seminars are very interesting and informative so go to the VGS web site where you can download the registration form, print it, complete it and mail it to Mike Garvin.  Mike’s address is on the registration form.
